How do I pick a good topic?
There are three things that you should ask yourself in selecting a topic.
1. What are you interested in?
Speeches should be fun! This may be the only
opportunity you have during your career to stand in front of your peers and hold
their undivided attention for seven minutes. Make the most of it, and make
sure that you're talking about something that you care about. If you like
exotic cars and you've been asked to deliver an informative speech, inform your
audience about three or four cars that you like. And even if you have to
give a persuasive speech, you can still keep the same topic-- just persuade your
audience that one of them is better than the others. It's that easy!
2. What is your audience interested in?
While your speech is supposed to be fun for you, try to
make it fun for your audience as well. Select a topic that you think at
least some of the class will enjoy as much as you do. The more interesting
your topic is to them, the more likely they will pay attention and give you
positive feedback during your speech.
3. What are people talking about?
It's easier to give a speech about a topic that's been
written about extensively. Why? There are more sources for you to
find and the topic is more likely to be interesting to your audience.
